Workout Hangover?

What in the world is a workout hangover, and who drinks at the gym anyway?  Actually a workout hangover is when someone misses work due to being overly sore  from working out!  We’ve all woken up a day or two after a crushing leg day and used the railing to assist our aching butt and legs down the stairs, but missing work?  Come on!

Recent research shows more than one in four active Americans have skipped out on work due to a workout “hangover” (post-exercise soreness that impedes one’s ability to participate in other life and work activities).

It isn’t just work, as many as 55% have said they stayed inside all day from these so called workout hangovers.  In all honesty, it may seem a bit dramatic, but we all remember the time when we had taken a long break from the gym or working out and over did it the first day back.  The pain and discomfort the following few days can be quite severe.  It should be a good reminder for everyone, even experienced athletes, that we all need to know when to slow it down and ease back into a workout program.

The article goes on to say that most of those experiencing a workout hangover, were not educated and didn’t know about dietary and recovery supplements to help ease their pain.  In addition, the same group had 65% sustain injuries from their workouts (average of 3 per year).   I’m not sure if this was a random sample, but that seems like a lot of people who didn’t know what they were doing.

Play it safe folks, if you don’t know what you are doing, ask for help, better yet, ask a Balance trainer.  If you do know what you are doing, ease back into workout programs, or pay the dreaded price of a workout hangover!
