Meet the Balance Gym Bike to the Beach Team!

This weekend, Balance members and staff will be participating in Bike to the Beach – a 108-mile bike ride from Washington, DC to Dewey Beach, DE, to raise money for Autism Speaks. We’re thrilled to participate in this event for the 10th year in a row, and wanted to introduce you to some of this year’s team members! There’s still time to support the fundraiser – make sure to donate online!

Why do you Bike to the Beach? How are you training this year?

I think the camaraderie around biking with friends and a team all the way to a destination (even better, the beach) is really special and of course supporting Autism Speaks is a big part of this ride. Thus far I’ve been taking lots of spin classes at Balance to help build endurance, and have also been riding around 30-40 miles each weekend, which will hopefully get me to the beach!

Why do you Bike to the Beach? How are you training this year?

I like the challenge, I like the cause, and I like the beach– a trifecta! I have wanted to do Bike to the Beach for years but never took the plunge. This summer I bought a new road bike and thought this would be the perfect way to put it to good use! I bike commute to work everyday, rain or shine (or snow, or hurricanes…) and I’ve recently started doing long rides on weekends to get used to being on a bike for hours. In addition, I’ve incorporated CrossFit and CrossFit Endurance workouts (programmed by Brandon Petelin) on a bike once a week. The 100 mile ride will be by far the longest I have ever ridden, so I am just hoping to finish in a reasonable time!

What are you most looking forward to about the event?

Enjoying an orange crush at the Rusty Rudder after crossing the finish line!

Why do you Bike to the Beach?

I’ve been talking about doing it for years, just never made the plunge until now. It combines three pretty awesome things: a great cause, a serious athletic challenge, and a really fun party at the beach–what’s not to love?! I’ve raised over $500 for autism already and I know that’s gonna be such an inspiration on the ride. When I get into a dark place on the ride I’m going to think about the folks I know that have been affected by this disability and everything Bike to the Beach is doing to help them. They’re going to push me through. They’re going to get me to the finish line…and then hopefully that will get some more folks to donate to this great cause.
