  • How'd you hear about Balance?

There is a saying within the wrestling world “Once you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easy.”  For someone who spent twelve years wrestling, I never really thought much about that goofy quote, it was just something that was said by your coaches every once in a while.

However, as an adult, I have found there to be a tremendous amount of truth to this statement, but it has nothing to do with wrestling and everything to do with being uncomfortable.  The quote should say “Once you’ve learned to be uncomfortable, everything else in life is easy.”  Wrestling puts you into some of the most uncomfortable positions imaginable.  First, you need to wear a ridiculous outfit in front of hundreds of people and tangle with someone in an equally offensive getup.  You need to learn how to lose weight, work harder than you ever have, cope with losing, and be a good teammate.  Honestly, there are many more examples to the difficulties you must overcome to be a successful wrestler and they all have to do with being put into uncomfortable situations.

For many people, joining a gym is an uncomfortable situation.   They see this massive, social ecosystem, of super fit people ruling the lower class of overweight and weak.  This is the last thing an unfit, under exercised, person wants to subject themselves to, let alone join and go every day!  Many decide never to join simply because they don’t want to be in that position.

If you have never joined a gym, all you see is a vain atmosphere, full of big butts and tight shorts; a place you never see yourself fitting in or being comfortable.  The truth is, most gym cultures are actually nothing like that.  The gym is made up of people just like you, scared, out of place, and uncomfortable.  When they decided to join, they were terrified of being judged and misunderstood.  Balance Gym is made up of new moms, overworked professionals, people struggling, dog lovers, cat lovers, vegans, and steak eaters.  We find that many of our members who came here vulnerable and uncomfortable, have found purpose, confidence, support, and even friends.

However, everyone that has walked through our door has been uncomfortable or felt vulnerable at some point.  They all needed to take that first step to see and realize they had nothing to be afraid of.

If you have been on the fence about joining a gym, we recommend you don’t just walk by and peek through the window. Stop in and ask questions.  The Fitness Consultants at Balance can help you seek out and find others who are just like you with similar fitness goals and objectives.

If you can learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable we think you’ll find a home at Balance.
